Muzaffarnagar: Sugar mills in the district that were planning to close their operations by May end are now rescheduling their closure dates depending on the availability of sugarcane crop in their respective regions. The bumper crop this season has increased their crushing period. According to the media report, Titawi sugar mill that was scheduled to close its operation by May end will now continue crushing operations till June 5.
Few mills from the district have already completed the crushing season. Despite the corona threat, sugar mills from Muzaffarnagar register record sugar production. The mills continued crushing during lockdown after state government issued instructions to operate in the interest of cane farmers. Now sugar mills in Muzaffarnagar are heading towards closing the crushing season.
Sugar mills in Uttar Pradesh have produced 125.46 lakh tonnes of sugar as on 31st May’ 2020, which is 7.65 lakh tonnes higher than the production of 117.81 lakh tonnes produced by them last year on the corresponding date. Out of 119 mills which operated this year, 105 mills have ended their crushing and only 14 mills continue their operations.
