Tamil Manila Congress president G. K. Vasan has urged the state government to include sugarcane in the Pongal gift hamper to be distributed on ration cards, reports The Hindu.
He has issued a statement stating that the sugarcane cultivators in Tamil Nadu are expecting the government to purchase the sugarcane in bulk from them ahead of Pongal. The government’s decision not to include cane in the gift hamper would affect the farmers financially and would expose the government’s anti-farmer stand.
Government should provide one sugar cane per ration card holder, he said.
Providing sugarcane along with a gift hampers will help the public as well as they would not have to buy it separately for the festival, he said.
