Sugar mill manager, contractor booked after toddler dies due to hot ash: Media report

Bijnor: A two-and-a-half-year-old girl died after stumbbled into a pile of burning ash allegedly dumped by a sugar mill contractor in Paidi Sadat village on April 3. Her parents and a neighbour, who tried to rescue her, also suffered burns. Police have registered a case against an unidentified contractor and the mill manager, reported The Times of India.

The victim, Anaviya, was walking with her mother when she stumbled into the ash, which was still hot underneath. Her father, Taufiq, a guard at a nearby mango orchard, said, “I heard her screams and rushed to help, but we couldn’t save her. We got burned trying to pull her out.”

Anaviya, her parents, and a neighbour, Kalwa, were taken to the hospital, where the child later succumbed to her injuries.

Police have filed an FIR under Section 287 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (negligent conduct involving fire or combustible material) based on Taufiq’s complaint. “The investigation is ongoing,” said Station House Officer (City) Uday Pratap Singh.

Taufiq claimed that the contractor had dumped ash in the area before, but no action was taken.

Sub-Divisional Magistrate Avneesh Kumar said authorities are investigating the incident, and the pollution control board has collected ash samples for further examination. Legal proceedings are underway.
