UP cane department aims for 7% increase in sugarcane production and 10% rise in jaggery production by 2027–28

Lucknow: The sugar industry is set to play a major role in Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s goal of making Uttar Pradesh a $1-trillion economy. The state government has announced plans to increase the total value of goods and services from the sugar sector from Rs. 1.32 lakh crore to more than Rs. 1.62 lakh crore over the next three years.

According to the state’s Sugar Industry and Sugarcane Development Department, the value of the sugar sector has been rising steadily. It went up from Rs. 1.24 lakh crore in the financial year 2023–24 to Rs. 1.32 lakh crore in 2024–25. Now, the department is aiming for a 7% increase in sugarcane production and a 10% rise in jaggery production by 2027–28, reported The Times of India.

To meet these targets, the government has prepared a detailed plan for the current financial year. This includes raising the sugar recovery rate.

The government has also taken several steps to improve the lives of sugarcane farmers. Out of 65 lakh registered farmers in the state, 46.5 lakh have directly received government help.

The state sees the sugar industry as an important part of its larger economic growth plan and hopes these efforts will make a strong contribution to its $1-trillion economy goal.
