UP government promotes drip irrigation for sugarcane crop

Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh government is promoting the use of drip irrigation for the sugarcane crop in the state.

The Sugarcane Development Department of the state has decided to cover 30,000 hectares of area under cane cultivation under subsurface drip irrigation technology for the 2021-22 season. This will help in saving water and increase the cane yield. This will save 50 to 60 per cent of water needed to irrigate the crops.

The official statement issued by the department said that “The drip irrigation technology will help farmers improve the yield of the crop and increase their income as well as save water.”

Around 2,566 farmers in the state will be benefitted from the scheme. Sanjay Bhoosreddy, additional chief secretary, sugarcane department said, “This technology will significantly reduce the exploitation of groundwater. In the crushing season 2021-22, it is planned to set up drip irrigation plants in 30 thousand hectares of sugarcane area. After this, the scope of the scheme will be expanded.”
