Pilibhit: The Uttar Pradesh government will be providing heavy-duty tractors of 50 to 55 horsepower to 77 cooperative and sugar mill societies to help them mechanize the cane cultivation operations, reports The Times of India.
A fleet of tractors was handed over to the concerned societies by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Monday at a program organized in Lucknow.
There are 64 lakh sugarcane farmers in the state registered through the state’s 158 sugarcane development and 28 sugar mill societies so far. Out of these, 46 lakh farmers supply sugarcane to the sugar mills.
Most of the sugarcane farmers in the state belong to marginal and small categories and do not have financial resources to buy tractors, the state government has ensured that they would have access to the mechanized system of agriculture through this scheme, said Sanjay R Bhoosreddy, the additional chief secretary of sugarcane and sugar industry.
“As many as 146 cooperative and sugar mill societies are having farm machinery banks,” he said.
There are six functional farm machinery banks in the district and we will get three tractors through this scheme at the initial phase, said district cane officer Jitendra Kumar Mishra.
