UP records lower sugar production this season

Lucknow: Sugar output in Uttar Pradesh has lowered by 8 lakh tonnes this crushing season as compared with sugar output last year.

According to the Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA), sugar output in UP has been recorded at 100.86 lakh tonnes till April 15 as compared to 108.25 lakh tonnes during the same period last year.

However, sugar mills across the country have produced 290.91 lakh tonnes of sugar till 15th April 2021. This is 42.66 lakh tonnes higher than 248.25 lakh tonnes produced at the same time last year.

In UP, out of 120 sugar mills, 54 sugar mills have stopped crushing operations and 66 were in operations this year on 15th April 2021, compared to 98 mills that were in operation last year on the same date.

According to the experts, a decrease in the sugar recovery and lowering of cane cultivation is the reason behind low sugar output this season.

Maharashtra which was lagging behind UP over sugar production has recorded higher sugar output. In Maharashtra, sugar production till 15th April 2021 was 103.95 lakh tonnes, compared with 60.76 lakh tonnes produced last year same period, almost 43.19 lakh tonnes higher than last year.
