Farmers in Uttar Pradesh have been vocal in their demand for an increase in the State Advised Price (SAP) for sugarcane, advocating for an upward revision to Rs 450 per quintal.
Reportedly, farmer organizations are gearing up for agitations to ensure their demands are met ahead of the impending Lok Sabha elections. The sugarcane crop, particularly in the Western UP districts, holds paramount significance in Uttar Pradesh’s political landscape. Approximately 45 lakh farmers spread across at least 44 districts engage in sugarcane cultivation, with 28 districts being the major sugarcane-producing regions. Given the political implications of cane production, this issue becomes especially significant in an election year. There is an expectation that the government will consider increasing the SAP.
