Uttar Pradesh: Farmers of Purvanchal incline towards sugarcane cultivation

Azamgarh: Increasing interest in sugarcane farming amongst farmers of Purvanchal creates a way for cultivation. This interest increased the area under sugarcane cultivation by about 2,700 hectares in five districts, including Azamgarh. Last year, there was cultivation of sugarcane on 12,500 hectares, whereas now it stands to 15,200 hectares, reported Live Hindustan.

Farmers from Azamgarh, along with Mau, Ghazipur, Jaunpur, and Varanasi, will supply sugarcane to the Sathiaon sugar mill in Azamgarh. Each year, a survey of sugarcane sowing is conducted in the five districts to ensure proper supply to the mill. For this purpose, teams led by sugarcane supervisors were formed to conduct GPS surveys directly in the farmers’ fields. The teams visited the fields to measure the area. This survey was carried out in Azamgarh, Mau, Ghazipur, Jaunpur, and Varanasi.

For the first time in recent years, sugarcane has been sown on such a large scale. Comparing data from the past three years, this year has seen the highest area under sugarcane cultivation. In the 2024-25 period, sugarcane was planted on 15,200 hectares. During the crushing season of 2023-24, it was 12,500 hectares, and in the 2022-23 season, it was 10,300 hectares. better and the mill shall substantially benefit the farmers.
