Uttar Pradesh: FIR against sugar mills as cane arrears stand at Rs 5,500 crore

Lucknow: The Uttar Pradesh government has lodged FIRs against three defaulter mills- Simbholi, Modi and Yadu groups for not paying cane arrears. The sugar mills in the state are yet to pay Rs 5,500 cane arrears to the farmers.

According to the Commissioner, Sugar and Cane, Sanjay R. Bhoosreddy, FIRs have been lodged against owners of the three mills under section 3/7 of Essential Commodities Act and relevant sections of CrPC.

Bhoosreddy said, “Umesh Modi of Modinagar group, Simran Kaur Mann of Simbhaoli group and Kunal Yadav of Yadu group will be arrested soon. The government has issued recovery certificates (RCs) against those sugar mills having huge cane arrears,”.

“As per the rule, the mills should clear 85% of the dues after selling sugar but it was found that these mills instead of paying farmers have diverted the money from sugar sales to other heads,” he further added.

Uttar Pradesh government has set October 31 deadline to clear cane dues. Sugarcane minister Suresh Rana while addressing a meeting in Shamali on Friday stated that the pending dues of farmers would be settled before October end. And If the mills failed to clear dues, then recovery certificates will be issued to them and dues would be paid after selling sugar from their godowns.
