Uttar Pradesh: Former MLA launches campaign to reopen sugar mill in Ballia

Ballia, Uttar Pradesh: Former MLA Ram Iqbal Singh has launched a campaign to revive the long-defunct sugar mill in Rasra, Ballia. As part of the effort, Singh is visiting villages across the region, collecting signatures from farmers to rally support for the cause, reported Dainik Bhaskar.

Late Tuesday night, he reached Abdulpur Madari village in the Nagara block, where he gathered signatures from local farmers. Singh stated that over 100,000 farmers were once linked to the sugar mill, which has been closed for many years.

The closure of the mill forced many farmers to abandon sugarcane cultivation, leading to reduced incomes. Singh highlighted that the resulting unemployment has compelled many children of these farmers to migrate to Maharashtra and Gujarat for low-paying jobs.

The former legislator aims to gather signatures from one lakh (100,000) farmers. Once this target is achieved, he plans to submit a memorandum to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, urging action. Singh noted that the campaign is gaining strong support from the farming community.

Over two dozen farmers participated in the event, including Digvijay Singh, Geeta Sharan Singh, Fateh Bahadur Singh, Pramod Kumar Singh Pappu, and Shailendra Kumar Singh.
