Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh: Sugar mills in Bareilly district, which operated until April last year, are set to close much earlier this season due to reduced sugarcane availability. Four mills will shut down by February, while the fifth will end operations by March 3.
Last year, the mills processed 329 lakh quintals of sugarcane, but this year, the estimated crushing is around 249 lakh quintals, less than the previous season.
District Cane Officer Yashpal Singh stated that if any mill continues to receive sugarcane, it will be allowed to extend its operations. According to the schedule, Baheri sugar mill will be the first to close on February 15, followed by the shutdown of Faridpur, Nawabganj, and semikhera mills on February 20. Mirganj Sugar Mill will close on March 3, reported Amar Ujala.
Singh attributed the decline in sugarcane production to excessive rainfall in July, which impacted in the fields. Further damage was caused by heavy rains and floods in September, along with the spread of red rot disease. As a result, mills will shut down earlier than last year.
