Uttar Pradesh government may consider increasing sugarcane price: Media report

The Uttar Pradesh government may make a decision on the sugarcane price this month, and if prices are increased, it will bring cheer to farmers but might impact sugar millers, who claim to be facing financial hurdles.

While speaking with India Today’s Kisan Tak, Sugarcane Minister Lakshmi Narayan Choudhary stated that a decision might be taken in the cabinet meeting whenever it is held in the second week of January. He mentioned that the report from the Sugarcane Research Center and experts has already been received.

The state’s farmers are eagerly awaiting the announcement, hoping that the Cabinet will approve the new sugarcane price during its upcoming meeting. However, Choudhary refrained from specifying the exact amount by which the price might be increased, the media report further added.

Earlier in the assembly, he mentioned that full efforts are being made to ensure farmers receive a fair price for sugarcane, and that this process is currently underway.

This announcement has sparked optimism among sugarcane farmers, many of whom have expressed dissatisfaction with the current price. Farmers in Uttar Pradesh have been demanding a hike in the SAP (State Advisory Price) for sugarcane as the new crushing season for 2024-25 begins in the state.

On the other hand, sugar millers across the country are urging the government to increase the minimum selling price (MSP) of sugar. The current MSP of sugar, set at Rs 31 per kg in February 2019, has remained unchanged. However, industry groups have called for an increase due to rising production costs and financial pressures on sugar mills.

The Indian Sugar and Bio-Energy Manufacturers Association (ISMA), the National Federation of Cooperative Sugar Factories (NFCSF) and other sugar bodies are advocating for an MSP increase, arguing that such a hike is necessary to align with production costs and support the financial stability of sugar mills in India.
