Uttar Pradesh government to focus on sugar mills expansion

The Uttar Pradesh government is undertaking a major initiative to enhance the income of sugarcane farmers and increase sugar production by expanding and modernizing several sugar mills across the state. Under this ambitious project, the crushing capacity of sugar mills in Gajraula, Bagpat, Morna, and Semikheda is being upgraded, while the Rudra Bilaspur sugar mill is set to undergo technical enhancements. A total investment of ₹1,967 crores has been allocated for these projects.

In Amroha district, the Hassanpur Gajraula sugar mill’s crushing capacity will be increased from 2,500 tonnes per day (TCD) to 4,900 TCD. Alongside this expansion, plans include the production of sulfur-free refined sugar, the establishment of a distillery with a daily ethanol production capacity of one lakh liters, and the installation of a compressed biogas plant. This development is expected to benefit thousands of farmers in the region.

The Baghpat cooperative sugar mill will see its crushing capacity rise from 25,000 quintals per day to 50,000 quintals per day. This upgrade will directly benefit over 22,000 farmers, who will no longer need to rely on other mills for crushing their sugarcane. The government has confirmed the availability of sufficient sugarcane and land for this expansion.

In Muzaffarnagar district, the Morna sugar mill currently operates with a crushing capacity of 2,500 TCD. Given the growing sugarcane production in the area, there has been a long-standing demand to enhance the mill’s capacity. However, work on the expansion plan, announced in 2021, has not yet commenced. National Lok Dal President Jayant Chaudhary has written to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, urging swift action on this matter.

The Semikheda Cooperative sugar mill will increase its crushing capacity from 2,750 TCD to 3,500 TCD. This expansion will facilitate easier sugarcane crushing for farmers in the area, leading to an increase in their income.

The Rudra Bilaspur sugar mill is undergoing a technical upgrade at an investment of ₹75 crores. This project will incorporate modern machinery and technologies, enhancing both production capacity and quality.

To ensure effective management and transparency in sugar mill operations, the government is implementing IT interventions. This includes the digitization of inventory management and procurement, the development of an online system for molasses sales and sugarcane management, and the installation of GPS monitoring devices on sugarcane transport vehicles to improve supply chain oversight.
