Lucknow: Sugar mills in Uttar Pradesh have produced 63 lakh tonnes of sugar after crushing 611 lakh tonnes of sugarcane till date, informed the UP Sugar Mills Association (UPSMA) on Saturday. The mills during the same period last year had produced 64 lakh tonnes of sugar by crushing 584 lakh tonnes of sugarcane.
The sugarcane recovery reported this season is 10.29 % as against 10.96% last season.
As many as 120 sugar mills have participated in the cane crushing operations since the season began in November last year. According to industry experts, the sugar recovery in the current season is likely to lower by 0.50 per cent as compared with the last season.
The demand for sugar has remained sluggish as there was no increase in demand during festival season and the marriage season is yet to begin.
The sugar industry has urged the government to increase the MSP of sugar so that mills would be able to clear the cane dues of farmers.
