In the ongoing 2023-24 season, sugarcane crushing season has been wrapped up in all sugar-producing states, except for Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.
While sugarcane crushing may be lower this season in Uttar Pradesh, both sugar production and recovery are higher compared to the previous season.
According to dataa from the National Federation of Cooperative Sugar Factories Limited (NFCSF), as of April 30, 2024, crushing is ongoing in 13 sugar mills in Uttar Pradesh, while 108 mills have already closed crushing operations. The state has crushed 975.00 lakh metric tons of sugarcane to produce 103.35 lakh metric tons of sugar, with an average sugar recovery rate of 10.60 per cent.
During the same period in the last season, 38 sugar mills were operational, with 80 mills having closed crushing operations. The state had crushed 1059.90 lakh metric tons of sugarcane, producing 101.75 lakh metric tons of sugar, with a sugar recovery rate of 9.60%.
Uttar Pradesh has witnessed a 1% increase in average sugar recovery rate this season.
As of April 30, 2024, crushing for the 2023-24 season has commenced in 23 sugar mills across the country, with a total of 3129.75 lakh metric tons of sugarcane crushed and 315.90 lakh metric tons of sugar produced.
Currently, Maharashtra leads in sugar production among states, followed by Uttar Pradesh and Karnataka in third place.
