In Uttar Pradesh, the ongoing sugarcane crushing season has gained momentum, marking a successful commencement of sugar production across both private and cooperative sectors. A total of 120 sugar mills, including those in the private domain, are operational in the state. The Department of Sugarcane reports that 85% of the capacity is actively engaged in crushing activities by these mills. As of the current crushing season, up to December 15, 2023, a total procurement of 2,286 lakh quintals of sugarcane has been achieved in the state.
According to the National Federation of Cooperative Sugar Factories Limited, 120 sugar mills in Uttar Pradesh have initiated the crushing season for 2023-24, resulting in a production of 22.65 lakh tonnes of sugar so far. The recovery rate in sugar production has also shown improvement compared to the previous season, reaching 9.30% by December 15, 2023, as opposed to the 8.85% recorded by the same date last season. The estimated sugar production in Uttar Pradesh is 110 lakh tons.
With the start of the current season, the Sugarcane Department is ensuring that sugarcane payments are made promptly and efficiently to farmers. It is noteworthy that due to the stringent approach of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, sugar mills have expedited payments of the previous crushing season.
