Uttar Pradesh: Sugarcane department allocates high-quality breeder sugarcane seeds

Pilibhit: The sugarcane department in Uttar Pradesh has distributed 61,505 quintals of high-quality breeder sugarcane seeds and nearly 130 lakh buds of disease-resistant seeds to 45 cane-growing districts statewide, officials announced on Friday.

Uttar Pradesh Cane Commissioner Prabh N. Singh shared details on the allocation, stating, “The seeds include three specific breeder varieties – CoL 16202, CoL 15466, and CoS 17231. Seed buds consist of 5 lahks CoL 15466, 10 lahks CoL 16202, and 114.6 lahks CoS 17231 variety.”

The Lucknow Cane Division received the largest share, with 12,239 quintals of seeds, while the Ayodhya Cane Region received the smallest allocation, at 1,990 quintals. The distribution was based on the areas designated for winter sowing. The breeder seeds come from research centres under the UP Sugarcane Research Council in the Shahjahanpur district, farms of private and cooperative sugar mills in the state, and progressive sugarcane farmers.

“This three-tier seed production system will facilitate nurseries of breeder sugarcane seed on farmers’ lands across the state,” Singh added. “Our goal is to ensure the wide availability of high-quality, disease-resistant seeds for future sowing cycles.”.
