The Uttar Pradesh Sugarcane Department has issued guidelines for the 2024-25 sugarcane crushing season aimed at addressing the issue of underweighing, which has been a concern for farmers in the state. The measures emphasize action against the concerned sugar mills as well as the weighing machine manufacturing companies.
As part of the instructions, the department has made it clear that if any instance of underweighing is detected, both the responsible sugar mill and the weighing machine manufacturing company will face legal action. An FIR will be registered under the relevant sections of the law.
Additionally, the guidelines stipulate that individuals who have been penalized for underweighing offenses in the past five years will be barred from obtaining a license to work as weigh clerks.
The Uttar Pradesh government is prioritizing the protection of the economic interests of lakhs of sugarcane farmers, many of whom rely on fair weighing to receive an appropriate price for their crops.
As of November 5, 32 of the state’s 121 sugar mills are already operational, and a total of 70 sugar mills in the state have started purchasing sugarcane by issuing indents.
