Uttarakhand: BKU demands hike in sugarcane price to Rs 500 per quintal

Roorke, Uttarakhand: The Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) has demanded that the price of sugarcane be raised to 500 rupees per quintal for the upcoming crushing season, reported Live Hindustan.

BKU’s divisional president Sanjay Chaudhary told reporters that the sugarcane crop in the plains of Uttarakhand has been largely destroyed due to flooding. He said the government should buy the remaining sugarcane crop at fair prices.

Chaudhary said that sugarcane has become a boon for sugar mills. Sugar mills now produce products such as ethanol and electricity in addition to sugar. As such, farmers should also be able to reap the benefits.

He said that the price of sugarcane was not increased last year and it should be at least 500 rupees per quintal this year. If the price of sugarcane is not increased significantly this year, the union will protest, he said.

Manoj Kumar, Virender Singh, and Harpal Singh were also present during the press conference.
