Uttarakhand: Cooperative sugar mills crush less cane in 2023-24 season compared to previous season

Dehradun, Uttarakhand: During the 2023-24 sugarcane crushing season, the cooperative and public sector sugar mills in the state crushed 4.374 lakh quintals less sugarcane compared to the previous season.

As a result, the state’s sugar production was adversely affected. On Friday, Sugarcane Secretary Vijay Kumar Yadav instructed the officials to take appropriate action regarding the current crushing season. He stated that last year’s reduced sugarcane crushing was a result of departmental personnel’s negligence. If sugarcane crushing remains low this year as well, personal responsibility will be assigned to the officials and personnel, and action will be taken accordingly.

The management of Iqbalpur Sugar Mill was instructed to clear farmers’ outstanding payments. Yadav directed the management of Haridwar’s Iqbalpur sugar mill to pay the outstanding sugarcane dues. He emphasized that delays in clearing dues cause discontent among farmers. The Secretary has ordered that the dues for the previous year be paid by July 15. For the dues of 2018-19, a concrete action plan must be provided to the government within a week.
