Laksar, Uttarakhand: The Sugarcane Department is gearing up to increase the area of sugarcane cultivation during the sowing season. In case of any requirement, farmers will be provided with sugarcane seeds from Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, and Haryana, and the department will cover the associated costs, reported Live Hindustan.
This effort by the department comes in response to the shortage of sugarcane this year.
Farmers traditionally harvest sugarcane from the plant in the first year, and the subsequent year sees the growth of shoots. Due to the floods in 2023, sugarcane crop has been impacted, leading to a shortage in sugar mills. The destruction of sugarcane crops may pose a recurring issue next year. In light of this, the Sugarcane Department, along with sugar mills, is working towards increasing the area for sowing scheduled for February and March.
