Vellore: Vellore Cooperative Sugar Mill has started using a sugarcane harvester to cut crops which is expected to address the labour issues the mill was facing, reports DT Next.
M Anandan, chairman of the mill inaugurated the cane harvesting machine at Karadikuppam village in Ranipet district on Sunday. The cost of the machine is around Rs 1.40 crore.
As per the media report, the machine owned by a private party was purchased at a 40 per cent subsidy granted by the lending agency following the sugar mill recommending the same.
He said, “The machine charges Rs 700 per tonne for harvesting cane. The farmers have welcomed the machine and have stated that they are now willing to cultivate cane as the machine would resolve the labour issue required for harvesting cane.”
“This year we have planned to crush 2 lakh tonnes and we are expecting that this would exceed next season as the machine has arrived,” Anandan further added.
