Basti: The attempt to restart Walterganj sugar mill is stuck over a deal as both buyer and seller are yet to sign the agreement. The MOU has been prepared but as per law, the buyer will not get power to start mill till both signs on the agreement. At the same time, DM Rajshekhar has instructed to start the process of arresting the president and board members of Walterganj sugar mill.
DM has also stated that mill employees can register a complaint against the administration if they are feeling that injustice is being done to them. It was assured to start mill up to March 25. After expiring time limit the agitation began in mill area. Taking note of this DM called a meeting of concerned authorities in his office. S N Shukla, DGM of the mill and Rakesh Varma, representative of new owner clarified that as per rule the mill belongs to the earlier owner and even license is also not transferred.
The issue of cane arrears is pending
The cane arrears of Rs 54 crore and salaries of workers amounting to Rs 7 crore for the crushing year 2016-17 is due. As mill was about to shut in 2016, the sugarcane was sent to Rudhouli mill for crushing. During this crushing season, the sugarcane from Walterganj mill area was sent to Rudhouli mill for crushing. The Rudhouli mill is yet to pay arrears of three seasons. The farmers from Walterganj mill area feel that the Rudhouli mill will not be able to pay their dues. This has increased their financial problems. DM has issued instructions to prepare a detailed report in this regard and send it to sugar commissioner.
Mill owner is new in this sector
Punjab based Living Radius India Pvt Ltd which has purchased the Walterganj sugar mill was working in the solar power sector. According to company representative Rakesh Varma, this is their first step in the sugar industry sector and Company has purchased the first mill.
