Water reservoir levels continue to deplete across country; Eastern States buck the trend

According to the Central Water Commission, water reservoir levels in the Southern, Northern, Western and Central regions continue to drop as compared to the corresponding period last year. Live storage in 150 reservoirs across the country as of 12th April is 58.308 BCM, which is 33% of the total live storage capacity of these reservoirs. Last year the live storage available in these reservoirs for the corresponding period was 70.398 BCM, indicating a 17% drop in water levels in reservoirs in the current year.

In the Northern region, water available in the 10 reservoirs is 6.380 BCM which is 32% of the total live storage capacity of these reservoirs. The storage during the corresponding period of last year was 38%, indicating there is less water in the reservoirs compared to the corresponding period of last year.

In the Eastern region, water available in the 23 reservoirs is 8.741 BCM which is 43% of the total live storage capacity of these reservoirs. The storage during the corresponding period of last year was 38%, Thus, storage during the current year is better than the corresponding period of last year.

In the Western region, water available in 49 reservoirs is 13.428 BCM which is 36% of the total live storage capacity of these reservoirs. The storage during the corresponding period of last year was 43%.

In the Central region, water available in the 26 reservoirs is 19.989 BCM which is 41% of the total live storage capacity of these reservoirs. The storage during the corresponding period of last year was 45%.

In the Southern region, water available in 42 reservoirs is 9.770 BCM which is 18% of the total live storage capacity of these reservoirs. The storage during the corresponding period of last year was 32%.

States having better storage than the corresponding period last year are Assam, Jharkhand, Odisha, West Bengal and Kerala. The State having equal storage compared to the corresponding period last year is Uttarakhand. States having less storage than last year for the corresponding period are Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, Tripura, Rajasthan, Bihar, Nagaland, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Chhattisgarh, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.
