Water reservoir levels depleting; deficient water reported in Godavari, Krishna and Cauvery basins

The Central Water Commission’s report on water storage in key reservoirs across the country as of 09.05.2024, indicates that total live storage available is 47.658 BCM vs 60.141 BCM in the corresponding period last year. A drop of almost 26% in water availability in the country’s reservoirs as of today, compared to the corresponding period last year.

In the Northern region, the total water storage available in the reservoirs is 5.759 BCM which is 29% of the total live storage capacity of these reservoirs. The storage during the corresponding period of last year was 37%, hence water availability in the reservoirs is less than last year.

In the Eastern region, there are 23 reservoirs under CWC monitoring, and the water available is 6.952 BCM which is 34% of the total live storage capacity of these reservoirs. The storage during the corresponding period of last year was 31%. The water available is better than that of last year in the corresponding period.

In the Western region, the total water available in the reservoirs is 10.339 BCM which is 28% of the total live storage capacity of these reservoirs. The water storage during the corresponding period of last year was 34%, indicating a shortfall in water availability compared to the previous year.

Moving to the Central region, water available in the reservoirs is 16.687 BCM which is 35% of the total live storage capacity of these reservoirs. The storage during the corresponding period of last year was 41%, indicating a shortfall.

Water reservoirs in the Southern region are left with only 7.921 BCM of water which is 15% of the total live storage capacity of these reservoirs. The storage during the corresponding period of last year was 27%, indicating a sharp fall in water availability compared to last year’s same period.
