Wheat prices in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar have increased by 4-5% due to a shortage of commodities in these states, reports The Economic Times.
UP is the largest wheat producer in the country and the eastern part of the state and Bihar are forced to import wheat from other states to run flour mills, said traders. The shipping out of all the excess wheat for exports and higher demand due to the increased capacity of flour mills have kept wheat prices higher.
The southern states have adequate wheat supplies as the wheat from these states were stranded at ports after the centre banned the export of the commodity in May.
“For the first time in 20 years, I am buying wheat from Rajasthan. We used to borrow wheat from eastern UP and Bihar,” said a wheat miller from West Bengal.
