Palwal, Haryana: A workshop was organized in Dighot village by Yuva seva Sanghatan to train sugarcane farmers about the new techniques of cane cultivation, according to Amar Ujala.
Agricultural expert Dr. Mahavir Singh Malik emphasized the importance of effective measures to ensure a successful sugarcane harvest in the Palwal sugar mill area, spanning approximately 20 thousand acres. To achieve higher yields from sugarcane, it is essential to implement strategies such as proper pest control, balanced fertilization, appropriate irrigation, and disease management, along with preventing the crop from falling.
Addressing the farmers during the workshop, Dr. Malik highlighted that the risk of sugarcane falling increases with its height. When sugarcane falls, it can result in a reduction of yield by 15 to 30 percent. Moreover, the infestation of pests and rodents also intensifies. To secure a good yield from sugarcane, preventing the crop from falling is crucial.
For safeguarding the sugarcane crop from falling during July, August, and September, it is imperative to undertake proper tying of the sugarcane. The process of tying should commence with creating porias (supports) in the soil, extending up to three to four feet in height. During tying, the upper portion with the bud should be kept open. The tying process should be carried out at least twice.
In crops with rapid growth, adjacent sugarcane stalks should be interlaced to prevent them from falling, even in the event of rain and wind. While tying the sugarcane, it is recommended to wear protective gear on the face and gloves on the hands.
