Yamunanagar: Sugar mill ends sugarcane crushing operations early this season

Yamunanagar: Heavy floods last year in Yamunanagar have taken a toll on both farmers and Saraswati Sugar Mills (SSM), reported The Tribune.

SSM ended its crushing operations on April 5, nearly a month earlier than the previous crushing season due to reduced cane availability.

Reports indicate that the cane yield this season is 15-20% lower than the preceding year, inflicting financial setbacks on farmers.

During this crushing season, SSM processed 1,46.63 lakh quintals of sugarcane compared to 1,66.36 lakh quintals last year.

The mill initiated crushing operations much earlier this season on October 31 to support cane growers. However, heavy rainfall and floods in July 2023 adversely affected cane yield and production, resulting in substantial losses for both farmers and the sugar mill.

Singh emphasised that cultivating sugarcane is a preferable option compared to paddy and wheat crops. He appealed to sugarcane farmers to expand their cane cultivation and assured them of comprehensive support. “Sugarcane cultivation offers greater returns compared to other crops,” added DP Singh.
