In India, the Uttar Pradesh sugar mills association is seeking deregulation of molasses in an effort to offload supplies that are currently drowning its local market following a record sugarcane crush while providing opportunity to supply other states that can’t fulfill their own demand. Even though the central government has recently deregulated the use of molasses feed stocks for ethanol production, allowing the use of B-grade instead of just C-grade heavy molasses, mills say that until states deregulate as well or there won’t be much benefit.
